Whether big, small, exciting, or serious, life transitions impact and change us. Whether it be moving countries, changing jobs, getting married, getting a divorce, buying a house, selling a house, losing a loved one, retiring, having a baby, getting a new pet, going through a break-up, or getting into an accident, these events are integral to our lifestyles.
Life transitions are known to be a period of change, and change is very normal part of the human experience. Things are constantly changing and in motion. Life transitions can be overwhelming, frustrating, and stressful. When these changes are too much for us to handle, they can impact our mental health negatively. You might find yourself struggling with anxiousness or feeling depressed around your circumstance. You might even feel a loss of self, and struggle to let go of the past. Here are some ways to handle life transitions and feel more comfortable.
Understand Change is Normal
We often forget that change is a normal part of life, and this is especially harder when we have set routines that we follow daily. If we also view new experiences in a very negative light, it makes change harder to navigate and affects our workflow. For those that follow a routine, try to integrate the new changes into your routine in a way that works so that you can find some stability during this life transition.
Express Your Emotions
Addressing our emotions and feelings around our life transitions, instead of avoiding or pushing our feelings of anxiety, can help move through the motions quicker. Bottling them up isn’t healthy and repressing your emotions and feelings can hinder the process of becoming accustomed to your life transition.
Life transitions are all about change and growth. It is good to carry the past with you in order to grow and reflect from your experiences, but it’s important to let yourself move forward into a new chapter of your life. That said, it’s not a race by any means. It is okay if you need more time to adjust to a new job, mourn a loved one, learn how to care for a pet. The process is a journey. Do not place pressure on yourself to move forward when you are still feeling uncomfortable.
Reach Out to Friends and Family
This part of your life doesn’t need to be handled all alone. Talk to your loved ones about your experiences, the changes you are about to go through or that you have already experienced. They can be your support system as you can express yourself to them openly and honestly.
Get Professional Help
If things are getting to be too much to handle at any point, and you feel like you can’t reach out to anyone, it’s perfectly okay to reach out to a trained professional. You don’t have to go through your life transition all alone and sometimes you might need another person’s insight or guidance to help you on your feet.
